Conference Delegate Support, SANORD Conference 2026
02/07/2026
Held under the theme “Reimagining Knowledge for Shared Development,” the conference provided a platform for research collaboration, knowledge exchange and critical dialogue. This year’s gathering was particularly significant as SANORD celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of Southern African–Nordic academic cooperation.
Advancing Knowledge Through Research and Collaboration
Over four days, delegates participated in keynote addresses, plenary discussions, research presentations, poster sessions and interactive workshops addressing contemporary challenges in higher education and society.
Discussions explored university governance, equitable partnerships, digital transformation, emerging technologies, climate change, sustainable development, internationalisation, future skills, and epistemic and social justice.
A key highlight was the Vice-Chancellors’ and Rectors’ Forum, held on 23 September under the theme “Reimagining SANORD: Strengthening Nordic–Southern African Collaboration for the Next Decade.” University leaders reflected on the network’s achievements and explored strategic priorities for strengthening institutional cooperation.
The conference also featured SANORD governance meetings and the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, showcasing postgraduate research from both regions. Through the Conference Delegate Support (CDS) Programme, SANORD supported the participation of researchers from member institutions, promoting more inclusive academic engagement.
Connecting People and Strengthening Partnerships
Beyond the academic programme, the conference created opportunities to reconnect with longstanding partners, establish new relationships and explore future collaborations.
The welcome reception on 22 September brought delegates together in a collegial atmosphere, setting the tone for four days of meaningful engagement, networking and knowledge sharing.
Celebrating SANORD’s 20th Anniversary
A major highlight was the SANORD 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 24 September, which celebrated the network’s journey, achievements and the people and institutions that have shaped its development.
The anniversary programme also featured the Brian O’Connell Lecture, delivered by Prof Eva Åkesson, former SANORD Chairperson, titled “The Early Years of SANORD: Reflections on the Journey, Vision, and Legacy.” Prof Sigmund Grønmo, SANORD co-founder, served as respondent, while Prof Priscila Baker, SANORD Vice-Chairperson, moderated the session.
These reflections honoured SANORD’s founding vision while encouraging the community to build on its legacy of equitable partnerships, mutual respect and shared knowledge.
Looking Ahead: Building on Two Decades of Partnership
As the conference concluded on 25 September, delegates were reminded that SANORD’s strength lies in its people, relationships and collective commitment to knowledge that contributes to societal development.
SANORD extends its sincere appreciation to the University of Namibia, the Local Organising Committee, speakers, presenters, delegates and partners whose contributions made the conference and anniversary celebrations possible.
As SANORD enters its third decade, it remains committed to strengthening equitable partnerships, supporting emerging researchers and advancing collaborative solutions to shared societal challenges.
