September 20, 2024 — Toulouse, France: The European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference wrapped up its highly anticipated four-day event in Toulouse on Friday, marking a transformative moment for global education.
This year’s theme, “En Route,” brought together more than 7,300 professionals from 90 countries, including educators, policymakers, and international mobility experts, all eager to exchange ideas on enhancing inclusivity and accessibility in international education.
Held from September 17 to 20, the conference spotlighted emerging strategies to adapt education systems to the rapidly evolving global landscape. Central to the discussions were topics such as the rise of virtual mobility, new student exchange programs, and leveraging technology to broaden access to international education for traditionally underserved populations.
A key theme that dominated the event was inclusivity. The urgency of providing equitable access to international education opportunities was underscored in numerous sessions. Speakers emphasized that ensuring inclusivity is no longer a goal, but a necessity for meeting global sustainability and development targets.
Beyond the sessions, the EAIE Conference provided an unparalleled platform for networking, with attendees representing institutions and organizations across the globe. Among the standout discussions were those involving key stakeholders from South African universities and European institutions, who explored ways to strengthen cross-border academic partnerships. The presence of the French Ambassador to South Africa further cemented the importance of diplomatic and academic collaboration between nations.
SANORD (Southern African-Nordic Centre) partners were especially active throughout the conference, initiating discussions on expanding partnerships with European institutions. Their focus on building new models of cooperation and knowledge exchange aims to bridge the educational gaps between the Global South and North, creating more opportunities for students in underrepresented regions.
“The energy at EAIE 2024 was palpable,” remarked one attendee. “We’re not just envisioning the future of education—we’re shaping it.”
As the conference came to a close, participants left with not only new knowledge but also tangible ideas to help foster a more inclusive and globally-minded education system. With its emphasis on collaboration and innovation, EAIE 2024 is set to be remembered as a pivotal event that redefined the trajectory of international education.
