Many of the world’s problems are global in nature and exceed the fragmented capacities of single institutions, countries and regions and, instead, require their combined efforts. SANORD therefore promotes academic networking, joint research, staff and student exchange and innovation in multilateral processes.
SANORD facilitates networking and meetings among leaders, researchers and students from Nordic and Southern African institutions to discuss and plan joint endeavours. Members get access to contact persons and research groups. SANORD assists with organising regular academic events including major conferences and symposia.
SANORD seeks to stimulate research for the creation and sharing of knowledge and understanding on issues of shared concern. Members drive the process of bringing together people, experience, expertise and equipment in multilateral and cross-disciplinary research groups. They identify academic fields and research topics where sharing of resources and expertise will expand the capacity and achievements of each member.
Facilitation and support:
The SCO, with the help of member institutions, develops the SANORD portal to provide information and facilitate the exchange among member institutions, research groups and individuals. To the extent allowed by resources from internal or external sources, SANORD stimulates activities by providing seed money for research, academic events, publications and so on.

Multilateral networking and cooperation:
The members engage openly and resourcefully with other members, aiming to create free and reciprocal relations and productive learning and innovation processes.
Members provide initiative and leadership for the development of common programmes and projects in creative engagement with societies, policy-makers and others in the two regions.
Events and information:
Members will arrange seminars or other events on campus to promote multilateral research collaboration and sharing of knowledge between our regions. Members will keep the SCO informed about such events and on other opportunities for SANORD academics and students, such as MA and PhD programmes, winter and summer schools, scholarships, research funding, new projects and so on.
Commitments by our members to the SANORD organisation:
SANORD is a low budget organisation with a low annual membership fee. It is kept low to encourage participation by as many institutions in the two regions. We request that our members attend the annual SANORD Council meeting at their own cost.
Institutional representatives and contact persons:
Members dedicate the necessary human resources, specifically:
1. Principal and institutional deputy. The principal of the institution and his/her deputy will normally represent the institution in the Council and, if relevant, the Board and will receive official information, such as concerning Council and Board meetings
2. SANORD Contact Person. The institution will assign the role of "SANORD Contact Person" to a member of staff, who will work closely with the leadership, handle SANORD administrative matters and be a contact person for the SCO and other members. The SANORD Contact may be nominated to represent the institution in the Council and Board. SANORD information will be forwarded to this person.
3. SANORD individuals. Member institutions will encourage staff and students with an interest in the SANORD regions and goals to be actively involved, register on the SANORD portal and to share knowledge in their fields.
4. Web-editor. The institution assigns a local web-editor who will work with the SCO with the uploading of information and other issues related to the SANORD portal, SANORD Newsletter and other information channels
